Homemade Dryer Sheets

If you’re looking for a simple, non-toxic mom hack, this is for you! Make your own dryer sheets at home with coffee filters, vinegar (yes, vinegar!) and essential oils. I know we use our coffee filters for LOTS of different things, this one is close to the top of the list.

What is this Witchcraft?

I know we all want lovely smelling clothes fresh out of the dryer and probably most of us use store-bought dryer sheets. BUT- you can make simpler, inexpensive, non-toxic dryer sheets at home! You might be skeptical at the beginning of this blog post but by the end we hope we have converted you to homemade dryer sheets!

Why Vinegar?

White distilled vinegar is a natural fabric softener plus helps reduce static cling. I have noticed that these aren’t a silver bullet and there still is a little static cling on my clothes, but it’s not as bad as not using them at all.

No, Your Clothes Won’t Smell Like Vinegar.

This is the question we get most frequently when it comes to these homemade dryer sheets. While we do use vinegar and it smells questionable going in, your clothes will not come out smelling like vinegar! I have noticed a slight vinegar smell when I’m not using essential oils in conjunction with the vinegar, but that is usually rare.

Main Items Needed

You need two main items to make your own homemade dryer sheets with one optional. Here’s what you need:

  • coffee filters
  • white distilled vinegar
  • essential oils (optional)

How to Make Homemade Dryer Sheets

I know there are people out there who make their homemade dryer sheets with reusable fabric squares, but we really like using COFFEE FILTERS. (Yes, another hack for coffee filters!) We like making them as we need them, plus love that coffee filters are biodegradable and compostable, too. Here’s how to make them:

  1. Dampen a coffee filter with a bit of white distilled vinegar. I have a spray bottle filled with vinegar in my laundry room that I use for stains and other things, so this is what I use. You’re not looking to soak the coffee filter, but get it damp with 1-2 sprays.
  2. Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil. While there are no laundry-scented essential oils, I have found that I like using lavender, lemon or Protect (a blend from Revive- use our code BRASHANDCO10 for 10% off.)
  3. Toss the “dryer sheet” into the dryer with your wet clothes, and dry as usual. They will come out free of static and smelling fresh!

A Note About Essential Oils

We have used lots of essential oils over the years- Claudia loves her Young Living and I use DoTerra. But we hate that they are MLM’s. So, we have started recommending Revive Essential Oils, mainly because they don’t require any sign-ups AND their prices are some of the most affordable on the market.

Every bottle of essential oils has a lot number printed on it and you can actually look up that lot number on the website and see all the testing that was done on that batch of oils to verify that it is therapy grade. We have a small discount code, but it does make a big difference because the oils are so affordable to begin with.

Use code BRASHANDCO10 for 10% off your order.
